Grilled Cheese Refresh
Grilled cheese is becoming a regular staple in our household. Our youngest son is very picky when it comes to eating anything. Usually his lunch or dinners are chicken nuggets, corn dogs, or a almond butter and honey sandwich. Somehow he tried a grilled cheese and loved it! It’s never easy to get him to try new things but his daycare center works on that and we try at home.
I grew up on grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. I love a good grilled cheese sandwich but lately I regret eating them because we eat them often! I need a twist or change to the norm. So I started looking at different recipes or variations. I found a few things that I wanted to try. By no means is this an epiphany, but me finding new ways to eat a grilled cheese sandwich.
The first thing I found when searching was using mayonnaise instead of butter on the outside of the bread. I wasn’t sure about the whole mayonnaise just because it didn’t sound good. So I added that as the first thing to change or try. I know what I make, my kids won’t try. At least not yet!
In the past, I have made grilled cheese sandwiches with slices of ham. It was great tasting and I enjoyed it. It gave a nice taste and bite to the sandwich. I saw many recipes with ham as a variation. I added this to try again.
I have also heard of adding tomato. When I was younger, I was like my kids. I didn’t try much of anything. In fact, when I went to a restaurant that I didn’t like much of anything, I would order a hot dog. Not anymore. I enjoy tasting food now that I am older. Tomatoes I will try.
I began thinking of other ingredients that I had in my house. I remembered that we had bacon. Bacon makes everything better! You bet I added this to try.
So my first variation was a grilled cheese sandwich using mayonnaise instead of butter, two slices of American cheese, and bacon. I use a grilling pan for cooking my sandwiches. It leaves great grill marks on the bread. You could also use a panini press. I can’t believe how good it was! The one thing I learned that I should do next time is put the bacon between the two slices of cheese. This was a definite winner in my book!
What’s next? I want to try putting the bacon, tomato, and cheese together. I even thought of adding the bacon, tomato, ham, and cheese. What variations of grilled cheese sandwiches do you like?
